HORROR IN THE UK! Dog buried alive in its own fur!!

Two dog owners from the UK are facing possible jail time after being charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty that ultimately led to the death of their English Sheepdog, Floyd, who had become cocooned in 28 pounds of hair, feces and filth.
Floyd is pictured here before 28 pounds of hair, feces and filth were removed from his body.
Staff at the Wood Green Animal Shelter discovered the five-year-old English Sheepdog abandoned on their premises and struggled for over an hour to groom him, removing 28 pounds of matted and filthy hair that hid a body covered in open sores. His cocoon of hair all but nearly prohibited Floyd from seeing, hearing or using the bathroom properly.
The dog suffered from mange, chronic eye and ear infections, painful two-inch toenails and an untreated tumor in his mouth. Despite the best efforts of theWood Green Animal Shelter to save his life, Floyd was humanely euthanized by the attending veterinarian due to medical complications.
Floyd is seen here shortly before he was put down for medical complications.
Floyd was owned by David and Marjorie Massey and in court the couple admitted to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. They are facing possible jail time for the willful neglect of Floyd which was echoed by the Chair of the bench, Dr. Disney-Durrant, who told the couple that “Because of the length of abuse in this case I have to warn you we will be considering a custodial sentence.”
David and Majorie Massey owned Floyd since he was a puppy and told the court that they hired professional groomers to care for Floyd’s coat until about a year ago, at which time they could no longer afford the care. English Sheepdogs have hair that grows approximately an inch a month and they require a thorough grooming at least once a week which can take from one to three hours.
Mr. & Mrs. Massey allegedly became embarrassed about his condition, and it was Mr. Massey who told the court that he had tied Floyd to the Wood Green Animal Shelter in the middle of the night, and then called police to let them know he was there.

Phoenix Police Seek Abusers Who Tortured Puppy, Gouged Out Dog’s Eyes

Andre will hopefully recover, but he will never be the same.
The Miniature Pinscher puppy was found by rescuers – eyes gouged out, starved and with BB pellets lodged under his skin. The Phoenix New Times reports that Andre was found tied in a plastic bag and left to die.  The dog’s eyes were so infected that the pus filling the sockets was draining out through his nose and down the front of his face.
Rescuer Susy Hopkins told the Phoenix Times that Andre was “severely dehydrated and looked like a skeleton” when she adopted him. “He’s been so neglected and abused,” she said.  She noted that when Phoenix was found his eyeballs were literally hanging outside of his head.
A blood transfusion saved Andre’s life and his spirits appear to be on the mend as well.  According to Hopkins, he loves to be petted and shows not only a surprising trust in humans, but a strong will to live.
Meanwhile, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators of this crime. “Animal abusers are cowards,” PETA director Martin Mersereau said in a statement. “They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them.”
A fundraiser has been established for Andre, who is expected to need further surgery as he makes his way toward recovery.
Since the exact location of where Andre was found is unclear, police efforts to find his abusers have been stymied. They are asking that anyone with information contact the Phoenix Police Department at (602) 262-6151.

Pit Bull That Protected Owner Put Down in Minneapolis

A pit bull who protected his owner from an abusive ex-husband has paid the ultimate price for his bravery. Putz, who was the subject of an intensive court battle, was euthanized on Saturday.
Putz was seized by Minneapolis Animal Care and Control from owner Debra Peters in October 2011 following a domestic dispute that resulted in Putz biting Peters’ ex-husband. According to Peters, it was a defensive act that came after the ex-husband spat in her face and then turned on Putz.
The man suffered injuries to one wrist.
When Minneapolis ACC officials assessed Putz, they declared him a candidate for euthanasia for three reasons: he was territorial, he didn’t sit on command and he didn’t respond to the vet’s touch. An ACC representative also asserted that if Putz had bitten once, there was a greater chance that he could bite again.
The Coalition for Animal Rights Education intervened on Peters’ behalf, as did several animal welfare groups who attempted to get Putz a place at a sanctuary. Now a Facebook page, “Justice for Putz”, has been established in the dog’s memory.

BUAV REVEALS NEW AIRLINE INVOLVED IN THE SHIPMENT OF MONKEYS FOR RESEARCH

The BUAV has uncovered a new airline involved in the transportation of primates for research. Last year, Brazil’s and Latin America's largest airline, TAM Linhas Aéreas, flew eleven marmoset monkeys from Brazil to the University of Nebraska in the USA.
Thousands of primates are transported by airlines hundreds of miles around the world for the international research industry. Some are trapped in the wild and cruelly ripped from their family groups, whilst others are bred in captivity and confined on large-scale farms. In recent years, an increasing number of airlines have stopped their involvement in the transportation of monkeys destined for research purposes, including in the past months American Airlines, Caribbean Airlines and IBC Airways
The BUAV has highlighted the animal welfare concerns associated with the transportation of primates. Monkeys can endure delays, poor ventilation, noise and temperature fluctuations. Over the years, incidents have taken place around the world where these individuals have suffered greatly or even died during their shipment to laboratories. Conditions that resulted in the death or euthanasia of monkeys imported into the United States during 2009 included pneumonia, enteritis, gastroenteritis, dehydration, weight loss, poor body condition and bacterial infection. Other reported incidents graphically illustrate the trauma experienced by these sensitive animals during their transportation on airlines.

Please contact TAM Linhas Aéreas to urge them to end their involvement in the cruelty and suffering that is intrinsically linked to the trade in primates for research; and to implement a policy as a matter of urgency to stop any future shipments of this type.

HERBAL ESSENCES CAUGHT DECEIVING PUBLIC OVER CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

P&G have been forced to withdraw an advert for their hair care range ‘Herbal Essences’ which falsely claimed ‘we don’t test on animals’, following a complaint submitted by Uncaged to the Advertising Standards Authority. When challenged, P&G admitted the statement contradicted thousands of chemical poisoning tests that they still carry out on animals for the sake of Herbal Essences, Pantene, Olay and other beauty brands.

Uncaged spearhead a global consumer boycott of Procter & Gamble to persuade the company to stopconducting poisoning tests on animals for the sake of cosmetics and toiletries. An international day of action is scheduled for Saturday 14th May 2011.
Although such tests have been banned in the UK and Europe due to public opposition to unnecessary animal cruelty, the practice still continues in countries with less-advanced animal welfare regulations such as the USA and China.
This decision will give consumers some clarity over the fact that P&G continue to subject animals torepeat-dose poisoning tests for the sake of trivial products such as Herbal Essences.
However, here at Uncaged we are concerned that hundreds of thousands of people will have read this lie and thus may be unwittingly funding cruelty to animals by purchasing Herbal Essences. P&G continue to issue misleading statements about their animal testing practices, and we are asking the ASA to widen their investigation into these fraudulent claims.
Uncaged urges P&G to really stop testing on animals, instead of just trying to deceive consumers into believing they care about animal welfare. This highlights the need for animal advocates to get active on 14 May to counter P&G’s lies and empower consumers to help end animal testing.

UNCAGED FORCES AVON TO RETRACT FRAUDULENT CRUELTY-FREE CLAIMS

Another Uncaged complaint has forced global cosmetics firm Avon to withdraw false claims that they don't test on animals. Uncaged had written to the Advertising Standards Authority in protest at a deceptive statement on Avon's UK website that told consumers:
'Avon does not test products or ingredients on animals, nor do we request others to do so on our behalf.'
Uncaged, one of the UK's leading experts on animal experimentation, informed the ASA that this statement was untrue. On the contrary, Avon themselves have admitted in correspondence and on their global website that they carry out toxicity testing on animals.
Avon explain that their refusal to stop animal testing is due to their desire to be able to incorporate new chemicals into their products, as they believe innovation will maximise their profits.
Uncaged's victory for truth and decency follows their similar successful complaint against Procter & Gamble last year over deceptive claims regarding their Herbal Essences brand. Uncaged point out that misleading animal testing claims are endemic in the multi-national consumer goods industry, and are calling upon the Government to take action to defend consumers and tackle unnecessary cruelty to animals.

Captive Animal Misery in European Zoos

The animals in this video were observed at zoos in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania as part of The EU Zoo Inquiry 2011, an extensive investigation conducted by the Born Free Foundation, in association with the European coalition ENDCAP, involving 200 zoos in 21 EU countries. It's clear that the poor conditions witnessed during this investigation have taken their toll on the animals. See http://www.euzooinquiry.eu

Help needed for Pit Bull bait dog

Ava's face shows the ravages of being a bait dog

CHESTER, SC........Ava is a sweet, 18 month old emaciated Pitbull that was used as BAIT.  Both sides of her Face are almost ripped off.  Her Sinus Cavity is broken. Her throat is ripped.  This poor dog has been to HELL and back.   AVA was picked up as a stray and brought to Animal Control in Chester, SC.  Based on how badly infected her wounds are, she had to have been on her own for several days begging for someone, anyone to help and show her KINDNESS.  Sweet AVA was almost MAULED to death.  Her entire face, neck and front of her body have been ripped and torn from hundreds of bites. She has chunks of skin hanging from her face that have exposed her teeth and jawbone.  I am shocked she is still alive.  She is skin and bones on top of all the injuries.   When we got the call from Animal Control and her pictures, we knew we were the Last Resort  for her.  No one else had stepped up and she was going to be put down the minute we said NO.  As full as we are, there was no way I could turn my back on her  With all of her injuries, her TAIL never stopped wagging.  We sent someone immediately to pick her up and had surgeons on call to immediately get her stable and into surgery the minute she arrived.  The doctors and vet. techs worked tirelessly into the night to clean out as much infection as they could and find some viable tissue so they could begin the restoration of her face.  Her entire body is infected from all of the open wounds that have gone untreated for so long.  Ava will have to have several more surgeries before we are done with the restoration of her face. Her recovery is going to be a long process.  When you have this much damage, it is a wait and see process from one surgery to the next.  As tissue dies, it has to be removed so it does not poison the body and viable tissue found that will granulate with other viable tissue.  Ava is stable and smiling.  For an animal to be in the worst shape imaginable and still want to shower you with kisses is amazing.  She has a strong will to live or she would not have survived all the pain and suffering she has endured in her young life.
