Memphis Animal Shelter, Two Weeks Later

You can actually view what’s going on via the cameras at the City of Memphis website – HERE

The warrant listen two names specifically, one, that of the shelter director, Ernest Alexander and and other, Ivan Russell, a field supervisor at the shelter.

Last Friday, Mayor Wharton fired Ernest Alexander who was hired in 2006 after a nationwide search for a new shelter director. It’s has also come to light the Alexander, previously involved with a shelter in Albuquerque, NM, also faced allegation of animal cruelty there. The firing came after a dog was improperly euthanized last week, the owner was never notified, and the investigation showed serious mismanagement under Alexander.

Three other shelter employees are also still suspended (with pay) as the investigation continues.

Investigation into records show that high ranking city official knew that there were problems at the shelter and not only they they do nothing about them, but in some cases added tot he problems.

AUSTRALIA- Ministers allow ritual slaughter

The religious ritual slaughter of conscious animals will be allowed to continue at some Australian abattoirs, after a decision by federal and state agriculture ministers.

The move has angered animal welfare groups, which have waited two years for a review ordered by the previous federal government into the practice of ritually slaughtering animals by cutting their throats while they are still conscious for some halal and kosher exports to the Middle East.

RSPCA Australia said it was an ”unconscionable decision” for a government that said it was committed to animal welfare. ”No animal should have to feel the pain of having its throat cut while fully conscious – it is simply cruel and inhumane,” said the RSPCA’s scientific officer, Melina Tensen.

''The animal welfare community has put together a framework where management practices will be adopted that are compatible with the individual abattoir's operation that will reduce the potential impact to the animal,'' Mr Burke said.

He did not elaborate on what the practices were that would reduce the animals' suffering.

with the aim of making any ritual slaughter practice as humane as possible.''

SPAIN- TORO JUBILO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THIS

Every year in mid November the people in Medinaceli, Spain, gather to "enjoy" an event of unspeakable cruelty. For the "Toro Júbilo" balls of "pitch", a sticky substance derived from petroleum or plants, are attached to both of the bull’s horns and set on fire.

A cheering crowd of blood sports enthusiasts harasses the toro de fuego or “bull on fire” once it is released onto the streets

The balls burn for hours and hurt the horns, body and eyes, causing terrible suffering. In some instances bulls ran against walls in a desperate attempt to escape the unimaginable pain and suffering.

TAKE ACTION HERE !!!
Note- i´m getting tired of those stupid spanish traditions!!! this people know that we are at the XXI century????????????????

Kathmandu, Nov 10 (IANS) Nepal’s best-loved comedian duo, who have also become the voice of the fledgling republic’s conscience, have joined the growing protests in Nepal against the horrific slaughter of hundreds of thousands of birds and animals at a temple in the Terai.

Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bansha Acharya - known as the MaHa pair and the only living beings in Nepal to have a series of comic books devoted to their antics - are asking people not to pledge to sacrifice birds and animals at the altar of the Gadhimai Temple in Bara district.

PEOPLE FOR CHINESE ANIMALS- A cry for help from animal caring people in China

"People 4 Chinese Animals" is a project of the Misha Foundation

To learn more about Misha:

http://www.mishafoundation.org/

I am writing to ask for your kind support for our lovely cats who are being stolen, sold and killed with boiling water by some evil people in Guangdong province, southern China. I will tell you more about it:

Every day thousands of cats are transported by trucks from many cities such as Nanjing, Shanghai, Jiashan, Suzhou, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Heibei, and so on to Guangzhou in small wooden cages that do not even allow them to stretch their bodies. When they reach Guangzhou, these cats are sold to the local markets and restaurants in Guangzhou, and get killed for food and fur. This mass and horrify killing and eating of cats has been happening for many years and has reached a peak in recent years.

There are some restaurants which make terrible dishes by killing cats with boiling water and even call them "water-boiled live cats". After long suffering during transportation, many cats are already injured severely or even die. Then these evil people catch them by their necks with a sharp hook, throw them roughly on to the floor and beat them with a metal stick until they are half dead. Then – horribly - they skin the cats with a special†device while they are still alive. Most terrible of all, they throw the cats into a pot of boiling water before they are dead.† I am very sorry to let you know this depressing story. However, these are the facts about what is happening here in my city, which claims to be the most civilized and developed city in southern China, and which will host the 2010 Asian Sports Games.

In Shanghai and many other cities where the cats come from, many people are trying to stop this stealing and shipping of cats. They are the animals right advocates and cats carers who have lost their beloved cats. Many people used to feed the cats in their houses or their local areas. But they have found that cats in their area have been disappearing rapidly. Actually the cats are stolen by bad people and shipped to the province of Guangdong where they end their lives miserably and leave their dear owners heart-broken. The damned cat nappers find the absence of the law to protect animals and take advantage of it. They pay some petty thieves to steel cats in the neighbourhood. The thieves usually use a trap with a bird on top of it so as to attract cats. Once the cats get into the trap out of curiosity, they can never go out again.

Recently some determined good people have joined together to establish a team, that is Shanghai Cats' Protection Team. They are fighting against the criminals on their own due to the lack of legislation for animal protection. They have won several fantastic battles on Aug. 05, Aug. 14, Aug. 16 and Aug 19, Sep 21, Nov.2 (Please see our reports for more details). We are so proud of these brave fighters, who, out of their compassion and love for our lovely animals friends, rush to the highway and dash upon to stop the trucks physically over and over again. They are fighting extremely hard battles, sacrificing their own time, comfort, even risk their lives to fight over the evil. We thank them for their heroic action, also we thank them to speak for us all animals lovers in China who, just like you all, never tolerant cruelty on animals and never stop pursuing for the virtue of love and respects of all life forms on our planets.

Shanghai Cats' Protection Team are formed by volunteers, among them are mostly senior and retired citizens, civil workers, freelancer and so on, female mainly. Their enemy on the other hand, are the evil cats nappers, who are criminal gangs and have committed to crimes in the past. Up to date this brave team has won several victories and save thousands of cats. However recently the cat nappers become more and more crazy, and the situation is dangerous for our cats protectors. On Nov. 2 2009, the insane criminals even at tact the cats lovers violently in front of the the police! However their terrorize and violence can never stop this brave people. What force that makes them so strong and fearless? That is the power of love and compassion, the power of humanity, the power of the highest!

I ask you with all my whole heart to support this loving rescuer team. Now that they risked their lives to have more than 700 cats saved from the criminals. These poor cats need to be settled down in a safe place, and sprayed, healed, and adopted. All this need a great deal of money, time and effort. They are desperately in need for your help. As you know, the Shanghai Cats' Protection Team is the No. 1 who take this action to fight against the cruelty on cats. Their rescuer action is significant. Please if you can give them a hand. Your donation will be a great help to the loving cats and above all to help make a change to animals rights movement in China.

I also sincerely ask for your help in some way to stop this unbelievable cruelty. I ask you especially for your help in writing to the your local media and to the congress government at a high level to urge the Chinese government to pass legislation for animal protection, especially to make the killing of dogs and cats for food illegal. We are hoping that your support and publicity could help end this cruelty to our lovely cats.

We allow you and even beg you to publish this article everywhere on the Internet, in the print media or anywhere else, so that this message can be spread out over the world.

Chinese-animals need our voice, and their people 4-chinese animals need our support. God bless these wonderful warriors!

DARCY'S story...

PLEASE read Darcy's story and sign the petition.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is battling "antiquated quarantine rules" in a bid to free Darcy, their much-loved rescue dog.
Darcy is being held in solitary confinement at quarantine kennels in Stanway. Her home during the day is a 2ft x 4ft pen, with an even smaller billet overnight. She is alone from 4pm in the afternoon until 8am each morning. A far cry from her regular routine.
Darcy flew to Sumatra with her handler John Ball, a technician at ECFRS' Urban Search and Rescue base at Lexden as part of a 65-strong UK search and rescue team sent out to assist in the aftermath of the recent, highly-publicised earthquake. The team included seven Essex officers.
The Essex team flew into Pedang and worked in an area covered by a huge mudslide that buried several villages and claimed hundreds of lives. Darcy and the team worked alongside other search and rescue dogs in humid, monsoon conditions.
But while dogs from Switzerland flew home and immediately went back into action, on Darcy's arrival into the UK she was shipped into quarantine, where she will have to spend the next six months in a tiny pen and without her handler who has been with her since she was a puppy.
John, who lives and works with Darcy, said: “Darcy has a Pet Passport but Indonesia is obviously outside Europe and therefore doesn't participate in the scheme, so she has to go into quarantine.
"The quarantine laws are out of date - Darcy has been inoculated against rabies and there are tests that can be taken to ensure she is not infected before she is released. Despite this, and her special place as a valuable rescue dog, she has to stay put.
“We are lobbying the Government to have the rules changed, but it could be too late for Darcy this time unless we can change the minds of policy makers quickly.
“When we got the call to go out to Sumatra with Darcy I had really mixed feelings. I knew that this is what she trains for and she could make a real difference and potentially save lives. But at the same time, I knew that she would have to pay a really heavy price for her involvement on her return.
"As a search and rescue dog, Darcy needs to be fit and being in a 2m x 4m pen for six months will seriously impact her fitness levels. It will also mean that her training is hindered - although she is such a natural at her job that we are hoping that won't suffer too much. But this will certainly be like a prison sentence for her."

Darcy lives with John and his wife Helen, a Control Operator at ECFRS' emergency call centre in Hutton, near Brentwood. "We don't have children and to us Darcy is family," said John. "She is a big part of our lives and now we can only visit her for two hours a day, Monday to Saturday. It will be difficult for all of us," John added.
Team leader Terry Webb, USAR station commander, is supporting John in his battle with DEFRA policy makers. He told a press conference on Friday that there should be exemption for fire search and rescue dogs. He said: “There was a Swiss team there and they had 18 dogs with them. All of them were available to be deployed at home immediately they got back. The laws in the UK are extremely antiquated and when we compare what John and darcy are going through with the experiences of the Swiss team, it really brings that home.”
If you would like to support our efforts to get Darcy released early, then write to your MP and send your messages of support to the

NEPAL- Medieval madness in God's name

From November 24 onwards, the Gadhimai festival will be held in Bara district. If it weren’t for the outcry in the international media and the reporting by our local media, you might not even have known; festivals such as these up to now are conducted in a quiet manner. The commercial interests of such jatras are enormous and the organizers do not appreciate interference from human or animal activists.

Nepal now has acquired the reputation of catering to and supporting the world’s largest animal sacrifice. Social campaigners are shocked by the fact that the government actually supports the unmonitored, cruel killings by donating Rs 4-5 million to the organizers. Officials from animal and human health departments dread the potential outcomes of the unchecked sacrifices: Bird flu, swine flu, goat plague, TB, food poisoning

A documentary made by Forum of Environmental Journalists, NFEJ, shows the savagery at the jatra. One scene shows 40–50 thousand buffaloes in a large field with hundreds of drunken men with knives moving around them. These are the people who are given the license to kill the animals. In another scene, the soil is seen soaked in blood and separated heads and bodies of thousands of innocent animals scattered all over. There is no method to these killings. The men are drunk and they pierce and gore the animals to death.

For decades, a lone crusader, Dr Jagdish Arohi, a Bara resident, was the only voice against this medieval madness. He stands with his posters and banners against the sacrifices. This year an anti-sacrifice alliance has been formed between religious groups, social activists and animal welfare organizations, both from Nepal and India.

It’s almost 200 years since the first anti-animal cruelty law was enacted and almost 150 years since India came out with statutes against cruelty to animals. Different Indian states prohibit animal sacrifice, which is why the majority of Gadhimai devotees are in fact Indians who travel to Nepal in order to continue the age-old sacrifice rituals. Gadhimai locally is actually known as ‘Indian Mela.’

Campaigners face an uphill struggle in Nepal. Here, even in year 2009, there is not a single law that protects the unorganized, unchecked transport and killing of millions of animals in the name of God. Why?

Is it because we are inherently cruel and barbaric? Is it because we are ignorant? Is it because of our acute poverty? Is it because we remained isolated from the outside world for a long time? Is it because the Europeans never colonized us? Or, is it because we never saw any social movements apart from political movements?

Whatever the reasons, our passion to inflict cruelty to animals, whether in the name of preserving and adhering to age-old cultural practices and beliefs or religious rituals, has no rationale in the world today.

Make a vow today to help stop the killings of millions of innocent animals in the name of religion. Convince your own family. Write a letter to your political leaders. Come to Gadhimai to join a peaceful demonstration. It’s so simple. Don’t wait another day.

NEPAL-The Gadimai Festival in Bariyarpur

Can you picture 7,000 young buffaloes being rounded up and killed by a thousand drunk men carrying large knives? A festival where 200,000 animals are killed to please a goddess?

This is exactly what -if nothing is done- will happen in November 2009 in Nepal. The Gadimai Festival in Bariyarpur, Bara District, is held each five years. The mass sacrifice turns the entire area into a marshy land of blood

USA- Lucky the elephant not so lucky

As the San Antonio Zoo's lone elephant, Lucky,a female Asian born in 1960, is living an extremely lonely, cruel and unnatural life, especially for an animal as intensely social as an elephant

Lucky has been living in solitary confinement since the death of her companion, an African elephant named Alport (left), in November 2007. Alport died at age 49, just days after being diagnosed with a serious orthopedic injury. No necropsy report to shed light on Alport's untimely death has been released by the zoo, despite a request from a consortium of animal protection groups in San Antonio

"A few months ago we learned that a company called Venison Deer (www.venisondeer.com) located in Marugán, Segovia, was engaged in raising deer to sell their dead bodies to restaurants and butcher shops. In addition, some of these were used to repopulate hunting grounds and others sent to a hospital in Toledo as if they were just material to be experimented on.

We believe that all animals with the capacity to suffer are entitled to certain undeniable rights. Perhaps the most important of these is the right to not be used as a resource. These deer were being exploited as if they were a source of food, a resource for those who take pleasure in killing and a resource for the laboratory. Undoubtedly, Venison Deer is an example of how all forms of animal exploitation are interrelated and are equally objectionable.

After several weeks of researching the business and numerous evening visits to the farm, the night of October 30th we went to the town of Marugán to return freedom to the deer that the speciesist businessman Javier Martín had stolen from them. For more than three hours we cut the wire fence, and sabotaged the all-terrain vehicle and the electric generator. After having torn down more than half of the fence, we led the deer towards the multiple avenues of escape. We know that at least 50 of them managed to regain their freedom and we think that at dawn many more would realize that there was now no fence to prevent their return to the fields. Anyway, if any were left inside, we will return for them.

We frame this liberation as part of the actions in memory of our compañero Barry Horne, who gave his life on November 5, 2001 in a hunger strike for animal liberation.

Frente de Liberación Animal"

USA- Student Accused of Stomping & Dismembering Cat Faces

LOGAN, Ohio — A prosecutor expressed frustration Thursday at not being able to file tougher charges against a college student accused in a heinous case of animal cruelty.

According to prosecutors, the student killed and mutilated a stranger's house cat, then used the animal's organs as fishing bait, 10TV's Glenn McEntyre reported.

Humane Society agent Saundra Harvey called it the worst case of animal abuse she has ever seen.

"He went to a home, went up on the porch, picked up a cat, took it to his pickup truck, threw it on the ground," Harvey said. "The cat was meowing; he stomped its head, proceeded to disembowel it, took its liver and went fishing with it."

Salvajada, no grave error

EMERGENCY APPEAL - The Animal House Jamaica

For the first time this year The Animal House Jamaica are facing a temporary, but serious, funding shortfall for the next three weeks. They have an online auction with some great items scheduled for the end of November and are expecting funds in December, but as of next week they have no money at all. NEPAL- Maneka Gandhi speaks out against Gadhimai killings

As a friend and neighbour of Nepal , as one who knows and respects her people , I beg all of you to abandon the killing of animals at the Gadhimai festival later this month

But the Gadhimai fair looms in front of us like an evil spectre, its blackness enveloping the subcontinent. Who is looking forward to it? Professional priests who will earn a lot of money from hides and dead bodies, cattle traders who are even as I write, smuggle animals from India to Nepal to be killed, scrupulous business people and alcohol sellers. The mela is being publicised all over the world as evidence of a violent barbaric past

The organisers have announced that they are going to aim for a world record — the largest number of killings of animals. In 48 hours, 500,000 animals will be butchered — more than one every second. How amazing that a nation of such gentle people would want to hold a record like that. The animals’ blood will sink into the ground making acres into a bloody marsh in which people stand, the stink will spread for miles and stay for months, the animals will run and shriek, the clothes of women and children will be splattered with blood…. if there is hell on earth, it will be seen at Gadhimai in all its nakedness.

The Goddess Gadhimai has not asked to be dishonoured in this way nor does she want to be seen as the Goddess of Suffering. She will be covered with the faeces, urine and blood of scared buffaloes, chicken, goats, sheep, pigs, rats, rabbits, pigeons. The ritual will include the killing of 20,000 young he buffaloes who are so important to the agricultural economy that their loss will be felt for decades and their death will drive the price of the living ones up by 500 percent.

How sad that Nepal should organise such an event, when most animal sacrifices in India have been banned and the rest are under siege every year.

This is not a religious mela. The buffaloes and goats have already been kicked and beaten on their way to the border. The deals have been made with the butchers and the trucks have been commissioned to take away the fresh meat and bones. The skins have already been sold to the contractors of Chennai and Kolkata who will turn these “offerings” into shoes. Contracts have been given to the alcohol sellers, the flower dealers, the food stalls. The Goddess Gadhimai has been degraded into a leather and meat seller. Hiding under the blanket of god-propitiation, the mela is being run by the animal skin/bone/meat coalition.

Gadhimai is typical of all animal sacrifices which are now propelled by commercial interests. The economics go like this:

In the olden days, the village priest was fed and looked after by the village. The priest made his extra income from the donations offered to the idol in the form of money, flowers and fruit. The offerings have not changed over time but the village no longer supports the priest. To make ends meet, he encourages flower and food shops to be set up near the temples so that the fruit and flowers can be sold back and recycled several times. But these shops function only on festival days so the priest is not assured of a daily income. He then forms an unholy triumvirate with the moneylender and the butcher. What happens next?

The priest has a ‘vision’ in which the Devi says that some calamitous event will take place if animals are not brought to her. This superstition is assiduously spread. The priest is full of stories about villages in which terrible things happened because animals were not sacrificed.

The villagers borrow from the moneylender to buy animals, which are sacrificed. Land, goods or part of the harvest are pledged in exchange for this money. A portion of the animal sacrificed is given to the priest and he sells this to the butcher. The illegal liquor trade benefits as the sacrifice is accompanied by consumption of alcohol next to the temple. If the predicted event does not take place it is because of the sacrifice; if it does, then the sacrifice has been inadequate and the number of animals should be increased.

Very soon this becomes part of village “tradition”. The priest and the moneylender encourage this because it increases their revenue. The indebted villager becomes poorer. Studies show that animal sacrifice causes a large percentage of rural bankruptcy. The land finds its way back to the large landowners and the farmer becomes a daily wager.

Not only do the economics of the village go awry but it puts power back into the hands of a feudal semi royalty which uses superstition as its weapon. All the sacrifices in India are controlled by the ex-royalty who lead and encourage the killing with the help of their allied moneylenders. During elections, this nexus influences the voting patterns as the villagers are now in debt. Animal sacrifice is also used to make and strengthen caste divisions creating more social tensions. This sacrifice causes both economic and social damage.

This sacrifice is an attack on women. Male gods are austere, benign, generous and peaceful. The Goddess is blood-thirsty, violent and cruel and can only be controlled by blood. Women are potentially evil, according to this belief, and must be kept under control. They are frightening, both in appearance and behaviour. This image was created to justify the suppression of women. Surely the mother who procreates and nurtures deserves a better reputation? Supporting animal sacrifice is supporting both gender inequity and perpetuating myths about the evil that is woman.

Some customs and traditions deserve to die out. Examples abound throughout history: slavery, public executions, witch burning, racism, sati, thuggee, human sacrifice, the segregation of women and Dalits from temples. The human animal is an infinitely adaptable organism. The loss of the customs listed above has not resulted in any harm to humankind. The same can be confidently predicted for the elimination of this terrible animal sacrifice. Sacrifice has nothing to do with Hinduism which is the kindest, gentlest religion possible with its link to all creatures of the earth.

In the words of Indian scientist Dr Krishna: “Animal sacrifice is cruel, disgusting and primitive. Bloody sacrifices brutalise the viewer, confusing the distinction between right and wrong. If one man supports animal sacrifice, another will support human sacrifice, the killing of children and women. How can any of these be permitted in a civilised society? All cultures and religions evolve, discarding ugly practices. Animal sacrifice must be rejected and discarded as a natural evolution of human consciousness “

Religion should be value-based and ennobling. Sacrifice is neither: It is cruel and disgusting. It makes us look small and vicious and illiterate. I have written to your honourable president, prime minister and several ministers — as have hundreds of people across the world. But ultimately the decision will lie with all of you. What kind of image does the New Nepal want to project to the world?

ARGENTINA- Support Benet: Make it worldwide

Not long ago, at around 2:00 PM an image struck the neighbors of Ezeiza (Buenos Aires, Argentina): Benet ran desperately, covered in flames, between the houses. The agonizing scream and cry of Benet caught the attention and compassion of everyone.

Benet was very well known around Ezeiza and it is why the ones who cared for him have done so ever since that day. It was because of their love that Benet is alive today and it is because of their love that he wants to keep living.

He still has two more months of recovery, but his hope is still intact. His right side and his abdominal are what the vets are really concerned about and even though he hasn't lost his entire sigh, he can't see without blurs because of the burns on his eyes.

Till today, Ricardo Eckerd tries to continue his normal routine in Ezeiza, but can't. Or might we say: they don't let him. Since the brutal attack became public he doen't stop getting home calls, cellphone calls, letters, mails, texts, you name it. He doesn't seem to mind that his neighbors have completely broken down his white Ford because he had it fixed a few days after. Of course, not without threatening the entire neighborhood. He suggests that the dog will "return to the neighborhood" so that he could "light him on fire once more".

His words and reaction did not surprise the neighbors of course. He had a record for public violence.

After realizing that his Coocker had gotten pregnant he decided to take revenge on the author of the cause: Benet. So he called the dog and poured gas all over him. A little kid was watching as he did this and Ricardo said to him: "Now, you're gonna see what I do". His first attempt to light fire failed. Benet felt fear and tried to run and escape but Ricardo ran after him and tried to light him for the second time. And this time it worked.

The author of all this is named RICARDO ECKERDT. He lives in Ezeiza, Buenos AIres, Argentina and can be reached at 011 54 11 4 295 2017

His address is "Ruta 205 36 PB 3 - Unin Ferroviaria - Ezeiza - BUENOS AIRES - ARGENTINA"

He works in public transportation driving buses for "EXPRESO ESTEBAN ECHEVERRIA"

NEPAL - Animal rights groups aim to stop mass slaughter in India

One campaigner told the Austrian Times, "There are so many sacrifices now that they have started to affect the country's agriculture. There are whole farms devoted to raising goats for slaughter rather than producing food."
The religious festival, which has been celebrated for the past 300 years is scheduled to take place in the small village of Bariyapur in Nepal close to the Indian border.
For two days, November 24 and 25, the village will "flow with blood" as many travel from India for the world's biggest ritual slaughter of animals, reports AFP.

Animal Nepal is one such group that will pit themselves against Hindu worshipers to stop what they call senseless cruelty to animals and they have also launched an online petition calling on the banning of the practice.
In an interview with AFP, Pramada Shah, director of campaign group Animal Nepal said, "We launched our campaign to put a stop to the gruesome killing of animals in the name of God. Even in the 21st century, innocent animals are facing cruel treatment due to people's superstition."
The campaign to stop the slaughter did receive a boost this year when Ram Bahadur Bomjam, nicknamed "Buddha Boy" by Nepalese media said, "Human beings have turned brutal by offering animal sacrifices to the goddess. This practice must be stopped now."

THE BAD PHARMA

An outsourced drug trial gone horribly wrong is the Pfizer/Nigerian Drug Trial disaster:

Pfizer has reached a broad agreement to pay millions of dollars to Nigeria’s Kano state to settle a criminal case alleging that the drug company illegally tested an experimental drug on gravely ill children during a 1996 meningitis epidemic.”

“Nigerian authorities say Pfizer’s infamous trial of the antibiotic Trovan killed 11 children and disabled scores more

Here’s a little more info on the drug in question, Trovan, which, of course, was tested for safety using animals:

“Trovan was never approved for use by American children. The Food and Drug Administration approved it for adults in 1998 but later severely restricted its use after reports of liver failure. The European Union banned the drug in 1999.”

Once again, animal experimentation failed to protect people from harm

Though this was just one high profile case, there are many serious problems with HCT abuse in third world countries. Things were so bad that a Chinese and European consortium, BIONET, was founded to create some ethical guidelines.

“The starting point for ethical concerns about clinical trials is that they raise questions of therapeutic misconception and informed consent, especially among ‘vulnerable populations’ who may be susceptible to wrongful involvement either because they live under unfortunate socio-economic conditions or because they are in a desperate situation when suffering from certain diseases with little treatment options.”

“Another important general issue…is the conflict of interest between researchers and clinicians: a clear differentiation should be made between provision of healthcare and clinical research. Yet, in practice, this has proved very difficult to achieve especially in situations where healthcare resources are scarce and institutions serve both purposes.”

This probably isn’t a big surprise. I think we all know that the poor people of the world are often treated as expendable or are considered to be not worthy of the same rights and protections as the rest of us. So when the conflict between pharmaceutical researchers and doctors trying to save patients lives arises, we can guess who loses

To add insult to injury, even if these human tests lead to a successful drug, these vulnerable populations aren’t going to see a benefit — because they can’t afford the cost of the drugs that their suffering helped create.

India, like China and Africa, where there are huge numbers of poor people, is seen like a gold mine to the pharmaceutical industry. From Asia Times online:

“Yet even as India increasingly emerges as a preferred destination for outsourcing clinical trials – testing of new drugs on humans – the country may also be heading toward providing the greatest source of human guinea pigs for the global drug industry.”

“Almost all top names, including Novo Nordisk, Aventis, Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline, have started running clinical drug trials in India lately, while some, such as Eli Lilly and Pfizer, which started much earlier, conduct tests on a number of their new drugs.”

“However, in India particularly, unethical and illegal clinical trials are most rampant and are conducted without fear because, say critics, there is no law to safeguard the interests of volunteers, while regulatory authorities,”by design or default”, fail to take action against such trials.”

Here’s one of the few times when someone did get caught in India:

“A government doctor and a nurse from Saurashtra’s largest civil hospital…have been booked on charges of carrying out illegal drug trials using health department resources.”

“…some staff members of the hospital had raised the issue claiming that lives of unsuspecting patients had been put on stake to benefit a private company’s research.

The poor and the sick are easy victims for abuse, but so are the elderly. Here’s what happened in Greece:

“The government has ordered an in-depth inquiry into the operations of all old-age homes in Greece after an inspection at the Athens Old Age Home found that residents had been subjected to clinical trials without their written consent.”

Why are human experiments so in demand? Why are large populations of “human guinea pigs” being exploited?

Because experiments on animals are ineffective, faulty, and lead to dead ends…especially of human lives.

Nepal not to ban animal killings at Terai fair

Despite urgings by animal rights activists to prevent the wanton slaughter of thousands of animals and birds at a Hindu festival in the
Terai plains at the end of this month, Nepal’s government Monday said it would not ban the killings due to religious sensitivities but would hope that public consciousness would rise in future to stop the practice voluntarily.

"We can’t use force to stop the animal sacrifices at the Gadhimai Fair,” Information and Communications Minister Shankar Pokhrel, who is also the spokesman of the current coalition government of Nepal, told TNN. "We have to keep in mind the psychology and sentiments of different communities."

Pokhrel, whose government has been urged by Indian animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi to intervene at the Gadhimai Fair in Bara district along the Indo-Nepal border where this year the temple authorities have announced they would kill at least 500,000 birds and beasts, said while he personally admired Maneka Gandhi, the government would not impose its will on any community in religious matters.

Told that Nepal had banned the sati system – that too was once part of the Hindu culture – the communist minister said it was possible due to the growing consciousness of the people themselves. “The government would like to encourage the growth of this consciousness so that in future the tradition of sacrifices stops on its own.”

However, he said the government would keep vigil along the quarantine posts on the Indo-Nepal border to discourage the smuggling of animals from India into Nepal for the sacrifice and would take action against people guilty of violating the law.

Animal rights activists say a large part of the devotees at the fair are from India. Since animal sacrifices are forbidden in Bodh Gaya in Bihar and its neighbourhood, hardcore Hindus travel all the way to Nepal to take part in the fair, which is held every five years, to be allowed to slaughter beasts at the altar.

USA- "Whatever happened to Oreo?"Brooklyn Dog Thrown from Rooftop

Let's Ask the ASPCA

Remember back in July when we heard the horrifying story of a 1 year old female pit bull named Oreo that was thrown off the roof of a six story building in Brooklyn? 19 year old Fabian Henderson was arrested on July 31, 2009 and charged with animal cruelty and reckless endangerment for the action which took place at an earlier date in June. Henderson has entered a guilty plea and will be sentenced in Kings County Criminal Court on December 1, 2009. Look for an action alert later this month with the details on the court appearance and contact information for the Judge and the D.A.'s office.

We have good news and bad news about Oreo. The good news is that despite massive injuries, Oreo was rescued by the ASPCA in a high profile case that was reported by several media outlets. Oreo underwent extensive surgery to put her front legs back together and since then, she has been at the ASPCA. No doubt the road to recovery was painful and difficult for Oreo because of the extent of her injuries.

The bad news is that Oreo is still at the ASPCA and no one seems to be able to tell us why she is not in a foster home or a forever home. Many have called wanting to adopt her. According to court reports, Oreo was injured in mid-June......some 5 months or more ago. The longer she stays in a cage, the harder it will be to rehome or rehabilitate her. Oreo has been through enough, she deserves a chance.

We know that you are busy, but your call and/or e-mail right now is vitally important so that Oreo is not forgotten. Hand written letters take longer, but are given more weight. Please take a minute to help poor Oreo, who was treated so cruelly and who deserves a chance to live a normal life with companions who will love her and help her get over her past trauma and abuse. Posting this appeal to blogs, myspace, twitter or any other social networking sites will be a huge help.

So, let's ask the ASPCA....."Whatever happened to Oreo?" and "Why isn't she in a foster or forever home by now?". Do your best to get directly to Ed Sayres (the people answering the phone will try to reroute your call to the press department or humane law enforcement) as he is the only one who has the power to make the decision to help Oreo. I am sure many of you are supporters of the ASPCA. Please mention that when you call.
