I am looking into the past records of Mr Leroy Baker of Sugarcreek Livestock Auctions to see just how many times he has been cited by the USDA. Perhaps a freedom of information law request is due to the Ohio State Dept of Ag. I would bet dollars to doughnuts that this guy is a "habitual" offender with a LONG history of violations and if that is the case he should definately NOT be allowed to continue in the livestock business.

Strangely enough, the listing I found this number for has the Sugarcreek Owner listed as an ELAINE STEIN. What did ole Leroy do? Sign over the business to this gal because he cant put the licence in his name anymore, due to all the citiations he has received in the past? Hummm, the plot thickens.

Like most livestock auction houses, animal cruelty is common place but some are worse than others. We picked Mr Leroy Bakers to petition because his auction house is one of the worst for animal cruelty and neglect. In addition to being "OK" with animal cruelty, Mr Baker also enjoys sending horses to slaughter. We are petitioning Mr Baker in hopes of compelling him to cease and desist in his well known practice of allowing, permitting, condoning and/or engaging in acts of animal cruelty, negligence or abuse as is commonly seen at his auction house every week. Personal eyewitness accounts have observed sick and injured animals being transported and run through the auction ring. Oftentimes horses with broken limbs or non-weight bearing lameness are cruely handled as they are pushed, shoved and prodded along with no thought to the animals great suffering. On at least one occasion recently Mr Baker was observed trying to force a downed horse to its feet by shoving it along with a bucket loader! There are law against these types of cruelties as Mr Baker is WELL aware but the problem here is lack of enforcement. Many animal lovers have claimed to have tried to file a complaint against the cruelties to animals as occurs at this auction house on a weekly basis, only to be discouraged by the authorities for one reason or another. People we MUST demand strict enforcement of our existing animal cruelty laws if it means we must DEMAND our right to file complaints and for full investigation and prosecution of same. Cold,, heartless sobs' like ole' Leroy Baker will never take our pleas for compassion and to abide by the laws seriously unless we are able to get the laws enforced.

Meanwhile we continue on in our fight to educate the world as to the importance of HUMANE TREATMENT of all animals in hopes that indifference to the suffering of animals on the part of some people such as Mr Baker will soon be a thing of the past.

CYPRUS- Heartbreaking Cruelty - Dog Tied up like in a Crucifixtion - Limassol Cyprus

On 21/05/2008 an English resident in Limassol Cyprus rang Argos Sanctuary to report that a dog was tied up (like in a crucifixtion) above his balcony in Limassol from 5.15am until 11.15am.
Argos immediately reported it to the local police and the police went to the flat but by that time the dog had been moved inside the apartment. As the police found the dog inside they could not prove who it was that had tied the dog to the balcony. The Police spoke to the dog owner and as there was not enough proof who had actually commited this terrible act, they said nothing could be done.

Argos Sanctuary decided to take the case to court but the police closed it due to lack of evidence. The President of Argos had a meeting on 05/08/08 with the Ministry to reopen the case and they now need your support.

This poor creature is still with the owners who subjected it to this horrific cruelty and God only knows what other acts of cruelty it has been subjected to since.

We desperately need your support to prioritise this case so they can save this tortured animal and prosecute the owners.

South Africa: Researcher performs sadistic operation on wild monkey

A Free State man who severed the spinal cord of a pregnant wild vervet monkey and removed its foetus for a backyard stem cell research experiment has been slammed as "callous" and "sadistic".

In one of the worst cases of animal cruelty that the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has investigated, the backyard researcher - believed to have been aided by two veterinarians - surgically removed the infant monkey last Friday and severed its mother's spinal cord on the same day in an experiment conducted in the backyard of a Bloemfontein house.

The adult monkey was paralysed from the waist down. The NSPCA said the man apparently caught the monkey in the wild because it was pregnant and of use for the "merciless treatment" - apparently to obtain stem cells from the foetus's placenta.

"This is a callous, sadistic man, and clearly, whoever is part and parcel of this is equally sadistic," Marcelle Meredith, the executive director of the NSPCA, said yesterday, adding this was the first case of its kind they had encountered.

"This is a primate. We know the intelligence of these animals. They have feelings."

The NSPCA heard about the incident from "courageous" informers and pounced on the rogue researcher this week.

The "horrific" and "unjustifiable procedure" had not been approved by an animal ethics committee, the body to which protocols for experimentation on animals must be submitted for consideration.

The man, who cannot yet be named, and who claims to be a doctor in physiology, had apparently been denied access to the Free State University's animal unit to conduct research. "His so-called stem cell research was then carried out of his own accord," said the NSPCA.

"Under no circumstances would this 'experiment' be approved. In addition to the horrific treatment of the animal, the conditions of the homemade backyard experiment were neither clinical nor controlled. What happened was indefensible and unpardonable … How on earth could any stem research like this have any bearing worth it to medical science?" Meredith asked.

Tattooed Pigs Banned From Modern Art Exhibition

The eight pigs were tattooed with designs - including replicas of the designer Louis Vuitton's logo - by modern artist Wim Delvoye as part of his 'Art Farm' exhibit at the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair.

However, following complaints from attendees of a previous show in Beijing, the pigs have been removed from the current exhibition.

Belgian born Delvoye, 43, says he tattoos the pigs - born and raised on a farm outside Beijing - when they are piglets and tracks the tattoos as they grow with the animals. The animals are then killed and stuffed and sell for around £106,000.

Seventy stray dogs intended to be killed and sold as meat were recovered by police authorities.

At 9 p.m. Sunday, the Quezon City Police Department (QCPD) anti-carnapping unit and non-government organizations (NGO) halted an Asian utility vehicle (AUV) along EDSA-Timog avenue containing 70 stray dogs.

The dogs are staying temporarily at the Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA), where concerned citizens can adopt and take care of them.

"Some people abroad think that all Filipinos are this brutal to animals," said Edgardo Aldaba of PSPCA.

According to QCPD, the dogs came from the CALABARZON provinces in southern Luzon and are set to be transported to Baguio city to be sold as delicacies. They added that syndicates purchase batches of dog meat which range from P100,000 to P200,000.

Enrique Pallasque was arrested by police authorities for trading dog meat. According to Mel Alipio of the Network for Animals, Pallasaque has already been arrested several times for the same offense.

Venho escrever a V. Ex.ª para exprimir o meu repúdio pelas declarações do Presidente do Grupo Parlamentar do PSD, Paulo Rangel, em entrevista ao "Sol", na edição do passado Sábado deste semanário, na qual este responsável do partido que V. Ex.ª dirige apresentou, despudoradamente, uma visão perfeitamente arcaica dos animais e da consideração que lhes deve ser destinada.

Tenho ainda dificuldade em acreditar que tudo o que li possa ter sido afirmado por um deputado que é, além do mais, líder parlamentar daquele que é, neste momento, o segundo maior partido de Portugal e que é, como bem sabemos, um partido que frequentemente tem responsabilidades governativas, além das parlamentares e autárquicas que solidamente tem implementadas.

O Presidente do Grupo Parlamentar do PSD parece ter seleccionado os piores, mais infelizes e mais preconceituosos pensamentos acerca dos animais para os verter nesta entrevista, da qual se destacam as seguintes citações:

· "Não faz sentido haver um Dia do Cão."

· "Também não [faz sentido haver um Dia dos Animais]".

· "Um cão nunca deixa de ser um cão. Trocaria a vida do meu cão pela vida de qualquer pessoa em qualquer lado do mundo, mesmo não a conhecendo. Uma pessoa vale sempre mais do que um animal."

· "Os animais merecem protecção mas não são titulares de direitos."

· "Não são eles que têm esse direito [de ser bem tratados e protegidos]. Nós é que temos essa obrigação."

· "Para mim essa é uma concepção errada [a de que os animais devem ter direitos]. Acho que só as pessoas devem ser titulares de direitos."

· "Os animais [também sofrem], mas não sofrem como nós."

· "A caça ou as touradas, enquanto tradições com determinadas características e determinados limites, são toleráveis. Fazem parte da Cultura."

· "Muitas tradições não acabaram e estas [caça e touradas] são daquelas que para mim não devem acabar."

· "Faço uma separação ontológica entre as pessoas e os animais."

· "Num contexto cultural devidamente integrado, certas tradições [como a caça e as touradas] – ainda que possam chocar algumas pessoas – são admissíveis. É a minha posição."

· "Não sou contra [a exibição de touradas na RTP]."

· "Desde que devidamente contextualizado [a transmissão de touradas pela RTP, televisão do Estado, expondo as crianças à violência contra os animais], não vejo nisso qualquer problema."

· "A menos que esteja em causa a extinção de espécies, não acho mal [utilização de peles para confecção de vestuário]."

· "A dignidade humana é um valor superior ao da dignidade dos animais. O Homem é ontologicamente diferente dos restantes animais."

Como é possível alguém poder pensar desta maneira nos dias de hoje? Como pode, além do mais, um importante dirigente político e parlamentar ter uma visão tão pré-científica e racionalmente oca dos animais e da importância que têm? E, mais do que isso, como pode alguém que ocupe este cargo cometer o erro grosseiro e monumental de produzir declarações deste calibre e continuar em funções?

Pela minha parte, não é neste tipo de político que identifico um bom representante – antes pelo contrário. Quero, de resto, chamar a atenção de V. Ex.ª para este aspecto. São as sondagens que o deixam muito claro: a esmagadora maioria dos portugueses preocupa-se importantemente com os animais e com o papel que o Estado tem e deve ter quanto à protecção destes. Integram na visão de um Portugal moderno e desenvolvido a protecção dos animais como um papel do Estado e dos seus agentes e representantes. E, a um ano de três actos eleitorais, o Partido Social Democrata pode sair eleitoralmente muito prejudicado pelo facto de ter como seu líder parlamentar alguém que pensa e se exprime como o actual líder parlamentar do PSD o fez nesta inacreditável entrevista.

Posto isto, venho pedir a V. Ex.ª que considere tomar diligências para encontrar um líder parlamentar para o PSD que seja pelo menos tão moderno e compassivo como o PSD deve ser e que ofereça uma boa imagem do partido que V. Ex.ª dirige, nomeadamente quanto ao modo como este se posiciona acerca da protecção dos animais, na certeza de que, tal como eu, muitas outras portuguesas e portugueses não se esquecerão, nas próximas eleições, das palavras do Senhor Dr. Paulo Rangel – e certamente que o PSD não quererá ser medido ou avaliado por esta visão e por estas palavras.

Ficarei na expectativa de uma resposta de V. Ex.ª que me descanse – e que descanse todas as muitas outras pessoas que partilham a minha preocupação – quanto ao que o PSD, enquanto partido, tem para dizer acerca desta matéria.

Espero que, no mínimo, surja um esclarecimento que clarifique que o PSD não pensa como o seu líder parlamentar e que, de futuro, atribuirá a devida consideração aos princípios da ética e da compaixão e a importância que estes têm para os portugueses.

Please Help Stop Circus Vazquez From Endangering Animals At Shea Stadium

Circus Vazquez will be performing at Shea Stadium in Queens Friday, November 7 through December 7.

This circus has a terrible record of animal handling and care. On March 31, 2008, one of it’s tigers was attacked, nearly decapitated, and killed by one or more of her cage mates after the circus left six tigers crammed together in one cage unattended overnight. The circus had been cited numerous times previously by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) for failing to provide adequate space to tigers. The USDA again cited Circus Vasquez for violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act related to this latest tiger death. Two of the surviving tigers have been ordered off the road and are at a sanctuary now, but three remain on tour with the circus.

Circus Vazquez' troubles are not limited to tigers. Since February 2008, Circus Vazquez has been traveling with elephant handler Will Davenport and his three elephants, Tina, Queenie and Jewel. In the past, the Davenport family has been repeatedly cited by the USDA for inhumane handling and failure to provide adequate veterinary care to the elephants. The City of Los Angeles recently ordered Will Davenport out of the city because of his record of animal cruelty. The Davenports are under official investigation by two federal agencies: the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for violations of the federal Endangered Species Act.

Circus Vazquez should not be allowed to use animals in New York. Please help, by taking the following FIVE steps:

1. Join members of both IDA and Win Animal Rights who are planning to protest, hold a huge banner, carry signs and hand out leaflets to the public.

Please help inform customers about the history of animal abuse and deaths associated with this circus! A pesar de que esta vaca era incapaz de levantarse, los matarifes trataron de obligarla a caminar rompiéndole los huesos del rabo. Finalmente fue arrastrada a la fuerza a tirones hasta quedar sobre un charco formado por la sangre de otras vacas.

Las bromas y las demostraciones de poder y dominación sobre las víctimas son habituales. Este cordero fue matado segundos después de posar involuntariamente con su verdugo.

Durante varias semanas, un activista del Equipo de Investigaciones de Igualdad Animal se introdujo en varios mataderos de España para ser testigo y poder documentar lo que sucedía tras sus muros.

Yes, there were wonderful milestones achieved for animals in California and Massachusetts in this election, but is our new President-elect, Barack Obama, fighting for change in the animal world as well? Here's PETA's official statement:

President-elect Barack Obama has said, "I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other. And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals." Because PETA is devoted to fighting animal abuse and recognizes the link between cruelty to animals and violence directed against humans, the organization is very encouraged by this statement.

PETA is also pleased that Obama and his wife, Michelle, have announced that they will adopt a rescued dog for their daughters instead of patronizing a pet store or breeder. PETA opposes large-scale breeding facilities, known as "puppy mills," as well as private breeders who bring puppies and kittens into the world while nearly 4 millions cats and dogs must be euthanized at the nation's extremely crowded animal shelters every year. PETA supports animal shelters and encourages all prospective companion animal guardians to visit their local shelter.

PETA was also encouraged to see that unlike other Democratic and Republican presidential candidates in the past, Obama did not pander to the National Rifle Association and other pro-hunting organizations by heading into the woods and shooting defenseless animals.

PETA looks forward to working with President-elect Obama and the new administration to help create change for the millions of animals who suffer unnecessarily in this country. What's next? If his stance on other animal issues is any indication, perhaps the next president will put a tofu chicken in every pot.

This poor dog is just one of thousands we have rescued in Corfu, Greece. CARE has no Government funding and in fact closed our shelter 3 years ago due to complaints from locals who accused us of sending rescue dogs abroad for experimental purposes as they are too ashamed to admit they do nothing to help yet are happy to see their streets clear during the tourist season. We have re homed over 3000 animals, mostly in Germany and each an every one has found a loving home - see some of these stories on our website http://www.carecorfu.com/. The tourist industry is Greeces main source of income but tourists are becoming increasingly aware that there is a huge problem with animal welfare and CARE is on the road 7 days a week, 24 hours a day if necessary responding to endless calls from mostly tourists who have witnessed terrible cruelty or abuse and ask us for our help. What many tourists do not realise is that at the end of the season a mass cull using poison is administered to all strays who take days to die in utter agony. We offer a neutering and spaying programme but many Greeks do not approve as they say this is cruel yet they are happy to have several litters every year and then think nothing of throwing the new born puppies or kittens into the sea or in the nearest dustbin. Our charity is non profitable and only employs one person on their pay role so any money you send goes directly into saving these poor animals and finding them a new start in life - its the least they deserve so please help in any way you can to make a huge difference. Doce reses bravas sobreviven en un viejo cobertizo a 75 kilómetros de Moscú desde que hace siete meses prohibieron la corrida en la que iban a participar

Encaramada a una pila de fardos de paja, Lidia Artamonova se asoma traviesa por encima de la tapia que la separa de sus 12 toros hispano-portugueses. Sus ojos brillan ante la manada. Coronados por lustrosas cornamentas sin afeitar, los astados yacen tranquilos, rumian en silencio y defecan sin complejos ante la mirada atenta de su ama, una rejoneadora rusa de 35 años empeñada en implantar la Fiesta Nacional en tierra de zares.

El pasado verano la alcaldía de Moscú prohibió in extremis la corrida en la que debían participar. Desde entonces los animales se hacinan en un precario cobertizo de 100 metros cuadrados en el pequeño poblado de Protasovo (75 kilómetros al norte de Moscú).

Aquí son alimentados con pienso y heno por tres obreros tayicos que combaten el hastío y el efecto narcótico del olor a estiércol con un radiocasete que no cesa de escupir música árabe. «Tenemos miedo, pero a pesar de eso trabajamos», dice Ibraguim, el jefe del trío.

Afuera, el temprano sol de abril ilumina la estepa, un horizonte plano sembrado de abedules que ningún miura cambiaría por una dehesa andaluza. En el poblado, las casuchas de madera color ceniza lucen sus fachadas repintadas con los ribetes de las ventanas coloreados al viejo estilo ruso. El graznido de los cuervos planea sobre el poblacho. Junto a la vaquería, en una plazoleta de madera roja de 38 metros de diámetro, Lidia se entrena a menudo con sus caballos y las 20 vacas que llegaron a Rusia con los toros.Después de 19 años, esta Catalina la Grande del toreo ha matado a lomos de sus 12 caballos más de 300 toros en Francia (donde tenía su propia arena), Portugal y hasta en plazas locales salmantinas.

En todo este tiempo, tres inesperados lances han roto la calma de los escasos 200 habitantes que habitan Protasovo. En verano, uno de los toros se les escapó, y tras cornear al director de la finca fue sacrificado a balazos. Cuando el incidente parecía olvidado, el menor de los obreros tayicos se saltó a la torera la ley seca que exige el Corán, se emborrachó y se introdujo en el establo, donde los astados dieron buena cuenta de su osadía.

«Jugaron con él como con una pelota de fútbol», dice Lidia. El chico perdió el conocimiento, pero sobrevivió a las heridas.Una segunda res murió hace tres semanas cuando, ante la mirada atónita de los guardianes tayicos, los toros sacrificaron al mayor de ellos ensartándole con sus cuernos. «Fue un complot», comenta a EL MUNDO Karl Shviedov, el ayudante de la escuela de doma de Lidia. «Al toro más viejo le salió un competidor. Este le embistió y enseguida le cornearon sus cómplices por los costados.Los toros lamieron la sangre y se alejaron», narra Karl.

Vestido con vaqueros y una camisa blanca, su aspecto rollizo apenas difiere del de un ganadero extremeño, por ejemplo. «Cuando lo sacaron muerto del establo, corté una pierna para mí», afirma sonriente.

Comprados a razón de 2.800 euros por cabeza a una ganadería francesa de Saint Martin de Crau los toros debían haber participado los pasados 8 y 9 de septiembre en una corrida portuguesa (donde no se sacrifica al toro) auspiciada por Lidia Artamonova. Cientos de carteles que anunciaban la corrida como el primer espectáculo taurino de la Historia de Rusia envolvieron Moscú. Sin embargo, el alcalde de la capital, Yuri Luzhkov, acorralado por las protestas de los grupos ecologistas y la cruzada antitaurina emprendida por la Iglesia ortodoxa, suspendió la corrida.

Desde entonces la rejoneadora ha tenido que lidiar con la indiferencia del Gobierno para salvar el pellejo de los toros, a los que quiere reutilizar en sendos festejos este verano: una corrida portuguesa en Yaroslav (a 300 kilómetros de Moscú) y una española en Kabardino-Balkaria (en el Cáucaso ruso). Dentro de un año intentará dar el salto a Moscú. «No quiero sacrificarlos en Yaroslav para no dar al Gobierno motivos de queja, pero en el Cáucaso ningún patriarca va a inmiscuirse», comenta.

Cuando suspendieron el festejo, la organización Zubor Plus, del departamento de recursos alimenticios de Moscú, se hizo cargo de los animales. Sin embargo, ella denunció la dejadez manifiesta de los funcionarios y tomó las riendas del mantenimiento de los animales. «No querían cuidar a los toros. Para ellos habría sido mejor envenenarlos y que el asunto cayera en el ovido. Vivimos en un estado medieval. El patriarca se mete en todos los asuntos», denuncia.

Menuda y vivaracha, defiende encendida su sueño de importar la corrida a Rusia y denuncia los puyazos que le han propinado por la espalda. La rejoneadora se considera víctima de un complot organizado por uno de sus socios, el ex director de la Academia del Ocio, que azuzó a la Iglesia y a los grupos ecologistas y de ultraderecha para que abortasen la corrida con vistas a quedarse con los beneficios del seguro. «Utilizó la religión católica como un trapo rojo ante la Iglesia ortodoxa. Intentaron que los toros murieran de frío», sentencia.
